3B Vinkjeller - Carpe Diem
Café 3B har vært en kunstkafé i Brattørgata siden 1985, og i kjelleren har Carpe Diem vinbar åpnet som et nytt kapittel — vin, fotoutstilling og intim stemning under et av Trondheims mest ikoniske serveringssteder.
History
Café 3B opened on December 13, 1985 as an art café with paintings on the walls in the basement at Brattørgata 3B. In 1992 it expanded to the first floor, which became a concert venue. The building has roots back to 1878, when M. Michaelsen's grandfather operated a milk shop in the basement and a temperance café on the first floor. In February 2025, three brothers — Roy Kåre Hansen, Thomas Martin Wiggen, and Odd Frode Hansen — opened the wine bar Carpe Diem in the original basement café space.
People
Café 3B is run by Stig Kirkhus and Ståle Helmersen, who handles concert bookings. The Carpe Diem wine bar was founded by three brothers under the name '3Brødre': Roy Kåre Hansen, Thomas Martin Wiggen, and Odd Frode Hansen. Roy and Odd previously ran Kafe Larsen (from 2003) and After Dark (1998–2004). Thomas imported wine from Moldova and Eastern Europe through Regala AS. The brothers reunited after their father's death in 2020.
Café 3B is one of Trondheim's most established concert venues, hosting approximately 70 concerts annually across genres from Scandinavian rock to reggae and hip-hop. Capacity is 90 seated or 125 standing. The Carpe Diem wine bar in the basement doubles as a gallery for Trondheim-based photographer and filmmaker Sven-Erik Knoff, with concert and vineyard motifs displayed at 10–12 locations throughout the venue, including the restrooms.
Brattørgata has been called Trondheim's coolest street, characterized by independent, chain-free businesses — from the vintage shop Prisløs and costume shop BareMoro to live venues Good Omens and Three Lions. Café 3B hosts Tuesday wine nights, Thursday 'Lun aften' evenings, and concerts every other week. The name Carpe Diem is taken from a Moldovan wine producer, Ion Luca, named Moldova's 'Winemaker of the Year 2024', who has run a bar by the same name in Chisinau for 16 years.
Carpe Diem wine bar serves wines from a wide selection of countries — Italy, France, Moldova, Romania, USA, Czech Republic, Germany, Spain, and Ukraine — supplied by Norwegian Beverage Group in Oslo and local importers Regala and Bap Import. The concept is 'wine for the people' at accessible prices. The food menu features charcuterie and cheese platters, tapas, and pintxos, prepared by chef Daria from Ukraine.
Architecture
The building at Brattørgata 3B/5 was formerly known as Findvedgården, a traditional courtyard building that before the great city fire of 1681 was positioned along Brattørstretet. The property spans 4,497 square meters and is owned by E C Dahls Eiendom. The neighboring building at Brattørgata 3A dates from 1904 in Art Nouveau style with wrought-iron balconies and arched windows, classified in heritage preservation class C.
Location
Brattørgata is located in the Krambukvartalet district of Midtbyen (city center), within the river loop formed by the Nidelva, running from Krambugata in the east to Søndre gate in the west, parallel to the main street Olav Tryggvasons gate. The street was named in 1841 after the Brattøra district, replacing Klubbveita which was destroyed in the city fire that year. From the 1880s, this was the closest Norway had to a Jewish quarter, where Jewish families built Art Nouveau and Functionalist buildings that still define the streetscape.
Carpe Diem wine bar is open Wednesday–Thursday 17:00–24:00 and Friday–Saturday 16:00–01:30. Table reservations can be made via 3bvinkjeller.no. The venue is located at Brattørgata 3B, 7010 Trondheim, within walking distance of Trondheim Central Station and next to Olavshallen concert hall.
